Garnett library book list [manuscript], 1870, 1879, 1939.

Lists of books at "Elmwood" were compiled after the death of Muscoe R. H. Garnett. The lists are in the hands of his mother, Maria Hunter Garnett, her executor Philip Stephen Hunter and his sister Martha Taliaferro Hunter. A later pencil list is in the hand of James Mercer Garnett, grandson of Maria Hunter Garnett and heir to "Elmwood." Explanatory notes in the front of the volume and on several pages of the list were made by Mary Barton Picton (Garnett) Mitchell in 1939. Several pages were torn out and are loose in the volume as is the 1879 list. The books are listed under the categories of history, dictionary, metaphysics and philosphy, drama, religion, biography, poetry, novels, miscellaneous, botanical and gardening, law, travels, periodicals, and geography. There is also a list of prints. The lists contain additons and checks and marks indicating later counts. A printed catalog from the John W. Lovell Company is also inserted. The calling card of Yelverton P[eyton?] Garnett and an invitation to the nineteenth anniversary ceremony of the Emerson Institute are loose in the volume.
